Post Contributions to 2nd Dist and Dept Officaldom

The Post began contributing to 2nd District and Department Officialdom in 1974 and has continued to do so ever since. The following are members of the Post who have extended themselves beyond the Post to hold 2nd District and Department officer.

 

Cephas C. Wright, two term commander of Post 190 (71-73) became vice commander of the 2nd District in 1974, serving one term.  During the 2nd District Spring Conference in May of 1974, he was elected commander and installed to the office June 27.  Thereby, Wright became the first Black 2nd District Commander in the 57 year history of the American Legion of Virginia. Wright served one term.

 

Warner S. Griffin, commander of Post 190 (74-75), became 2nd District Vice Commander in 1976, serving a one year term in that office.

 

James Gray, commander of Post 190 (75-76), became 2nd District vice commander in 1978, serving one term in that office.  In 1983 he was elected commander of the 2nd District, serving one year term.

James Elam serve two terms (84-86) as Post commander.  In 1984, he became 2nd District vice commander, and in 1985 he was elected District commander and served one term in that office.  In 1991, he was elected and served one term as vice commander, Department of Virginia for the Eastern Zone.  He has been  a long time member of the Boy's State Board of Directors, and also a Boy's State counselor.  Elam is also 2nd District Jr. Law Cadet chairman.

Harold W. Chambers was commander of Post 190 (87-89).  In 1990 he became vice commander of the 2nd District.  In July of 1991, he was elected commander for the 91-92 District Legion year. He went on late and was elected  Department Vice Commander of the Eastern Zone and served one term.
